If you’re lucky enough to be in Italy for Milan Design Week, you’re lucky indeed. Every April, the annual event draws interior designers, architects, and design enthusiasts from around the world. It’s a design extravaganza that our team leans on for information and inspiration.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK DATES

This year’s Milan Design Week, which includes the city’s famed Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone, will be held from April 7—April 13. While Salone del Mobile is held at the Rho Fiera fairgrounds, the rest of Milano, not to be outdone, becomes a showcase for extraordinary installations.

WHERE TO GO DURING MILAN DESIGN WEEK

  • RHO FIERA FAIRGROUNDS FOR SALONE DEL MOBILE
Our team spends a lot of time at Salone del Mobile, meeting with designers and learning about their latest collections. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to find the best designs for our clients and we’re really excited to be attending again this year—the fair’s 63rd edition. “Thought for Humans” is this year’s Salone theme.

The exhibition spaces are seemingly endless and offer visitors the chance to explore furnishings for bedrooms, dining and living areas, kitchens, outdoor living spaces, and much more. The innovative designs push boundaries and create exciting options for interior designers like us.
  • FUORISALONE CITY-WIDE EVENTS
This year’s Fuorisalone theme is “Mondi Connessi” or Connected Worlds. Year after year, there are some venues in the city that we always seek out. Here are just a few of our recommendations for not-to-be-missed installations/venues:
    1.  L’Appartamento by Artemest—Palazzo Donizetti is this year’s venue
    2.  Edra–Palazzo Durini
    3.  Brera Design District
    4.  Porta Venezia Design District—don’t miss this year’s colorful, cheeky collab with TOILETPAPER
    5.  Alcova—Villa Borsani
Duomo di Milano, Italia

BEFORE YOU GO AND TIPS FOR GETTING AROUND MILAN

With so much to see, navigating the city can be a challenge. Our team has a few practical tips for being able to enjoy as much as possible:

  1. Make a plan. If you’re like a few of us on our team and you prefer to travel by the seat of your pants…well this is not the time. There’s just too much to see and with the lines, timed tickets at some events, and Milan’s traffic issues, we learned the hard way that not having a plan means missing out.

Every year before we leave Miami, we sit down to review the invitations we’ve received from exhibitors and vendors. We then choose the installations around Milan that are must-sees.  From there we plan our visits based on regions of the city to ensure we see installations and showrooms each day that are in the same zones as the parties we’ve been invited to attend in the evenings.

  1. Buy your tickets in advance. You can purchase tickets to Salone now by following this link. Want to visit an art museum? The Duomo di Milano? Don’t forget to purchase those in advance, too.
  2. Allow extra time. One of the biggest surprises we encountered on our first trip? The subway wait times getting out to the Rho Fiera fairgrounds. The trains were packed, so we had to wait in long lines and it took much longer to travel to the venue than we had expected. And navigating by taxi wasn’t easy either. We missed two parties we’d been invited to attend in the city center because of traffic.
  3. Pack comfortable shoes. Because transportation can be tricky, you’ll be walking. A. LOT. Do your feet a favor and wear something comfortable. David loves his Lanvin shoes and recommends them for travel. You can also read about his other travel must-haves here.
  4. Mangia mangia. One of our favorite pastimes while in Milan is enjoying fabulous food in beautiful, design-centric restaurants. It’s easy to find restaurants in Milan that offer food that’s as gorgeously constructed as it tastes. A restaurant we hope to visit this year? Contraste.
